The course is designed to give students the experience of building a wiki with multiple contributors. Teams of participants will produce content with a combination of text, multimedia, and other enrichment tools utilizing varied “Web 2.0” tools. Each team will utilize a different Wiki Site of their choosing in order to compare/contrast wiki site features. With the vast amount of Web 2.0 tools available on the internet, this course is a great opportunity to utilize and explore what can work for your purpose, whether it be for personal or workplace use.
The goals of this course are as follows:
- Work as a team to build a wiki site focusing on a specific topic.
- Incorporate Web 2.0 tools (outside the purview of the wiki site itself) to enrich the content by providing.
- Appropriate links and/or references to research supporting the facts presented on the wiki.
- Links, and embedded multimedia, and other created content from Web 2.0 tools for a deeper explanation of facts and concepts presented on the wiki.
- Having students share the features and management tasks of various wiki sites and chosen enrichment tools.
At the conclusion of this course, participants will have acquired the following skills and knowledge:
- Understanding the team concept to build knowledge on a wiki
- Searching, selecting and utilizing Web 2.0 tools to enrich content of a wiki
- Utilizing plug-ins/applets/gadgets for wiki Multimedia enrichment
- Utilizing Wiki management tasks and tools
- Understanding the different features and management tasks of different wiki services.
As a prerequisite, participants should have the following skills and resources for a successful experience:
- Knowledge of web browser functions and features
- Experience of downloading/uploading files to/from internet sites
- Experience of downloading and installing browser updates, plug-ins and applets.
- Some familiarity with wiki participation
- Familiarity with hypertext markup language (HTML).
- Limited knowledge and awareness of Web 2.0 applications and tools
- Computer with Internet access (dial-up may be a challenge).
- Student owned Laptop for class not a requirement but advantageous.
